For most of Luke Fickell’s tenure coaching Wisconsin football, games like this have felt more theoretical than tangible.
Play physically. Control the line of scrimmage. Stay ahead of the chains. Make the opponent uncomfortable. Eventually, impose your will.
On Saturday, Wisconsin actually did it.
The Badgers beat Michigan State 31-3 at Camp Randall Stadium to improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Big Ten play. The final score was convincing, but the way Wisconsin got there mattered more.
Wisconsin rushed for 228 yards. Michigan State finished with 235 total yards of offense. The Badgers didn’t turn the ball over, converted eight of 16 third downs and went 2-for-2 on fourth down. Defensively, they kept the Spartans out of the end zone entirely.
It was Wisconsin’s fourth straight win, something this program hadn’t done since 2021. During that stretch, the Badgers are averaging 36.3 points and 403.3 yards per game while holding opponents to 10.5 points and 246.5 yards.
It wasn’t perfect. The passing game was inefficient for long stretches, penalties remained an issue, and Wisconsin left some opportunities on the field. But this looked an awful lot like winning Big Ten football.
With that as the backdrop, let’s hand out some grades.
