Wisconsin Re-Acquires Transfer LB in Unprecedented Recruitment
Yes, it really happened: the Badgers re-land Leon Lowery in the transfer portal.
I can’t believe I’m typing these words — but Luke Fickell and the Wisconsin football coaching staff somehow managed to bring Syracuse pass-rusher Leon Lowery back on board in one of the most insane Badgers recruitments in recent memory.
“These last 48 hours have been a whirlwind,” Lowery said in a social media post. “After thinking long and hard about my future, it became clear to me what was really important. I’ve had great discussions with my coaches and family … there’s not a better fit for me than in Madison, Wisconsin! I’m shutting down my recruitment & will not take any more official visits. I’m a Badger! On, Wisconsin.”
Lowery was listed as the No. 7 ranked outside linebacker available in the portal and re-chose the Badgers over reported offers from Cal, Georgia Tech, Houston, Baylor, Purdue, and Oregon State.
The 6-foot-4, 240-pound pass rusher joins the program with two years of eligibility remaining.
Badgers Re-Acquire Leon Lowery Jr. From the Portal
It will take some time to fully wrap my head around what just happened, but I know that in the end, the Wisconsin football team got their guy — and Leon Lowery Jr. is set to play for the Badgers in 2024.
The Wisconsin Badgers coaching staff envisions a significant role for Lowery, aiming for him to step in as an immediate contributor as an outside linebacker in Mike Tressel’s defense next season.
The former three-star recruit and New Jersey native has 30 career games’ worth of experience from his time at Syracuse, registering 75 tackles, 5.0 sacks, and two pass deflections. Lowery started all 12 games for the Orange last season and finished with 46 tackles, 16 pressures, 7.5 TFLs, 3.5 sacks, and a pass deflection.
For the second time, Leon Lowery Jr. is the first official transfer portal addition the Wisconsin football program has made this offseason — and checked a major position of need off of the Badgers wishlist.
