Wisconsin football hires Jack Del Rio as Senior Advisor
The Badgers added a former NFL head coach to Wisconsin's staff.
The Wisconsin football program has added a former NFL head coach and defensive coordinator to the Badgers staff ahead of the 2024 season.
The Badgers have tapped longtime NFL coach Jack Del Rio to join their staff as a Senior Advisor to Luke Fickell.
According to a report from Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, Del Rio will be bringing his wealth of football knowledge to Madison, where he’ll assist Fickell in guiding the Badgers both offensively and defensively.
Del Rio’s addition, though not entirely out of the blue—considering he was spotted at Badgers football practice a few weeks ago during fall camp—is a significant one for Wisconsin.Â
With over two decades of NFL coaching under his belt, including head coaching stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Oakland Raiders, Del Rio is no stranger to high-pressure situations, roster configuration, and game management. Not to mention, Del Rio also has experience in the NFL as a defensive coordinator and has spent time working for the Commanders, Broncos, and Panthers organizations.Â
The former NFL coach's background should give Fickell an invaluable, objective view of the team's coaching staff while also offering meaningful insights into Mike Tressel’s defense.
For Fickell, having a seasoned vet like Del Rio on his staff to lean on is a major win for a team looking to bounce back after a disappointing 7-6 season.Â
The two coaches share a commitment to toughness and disciplined play, and Del Rio’s insights could play a small role in helping Wisconsin football take a step forward as a program in 2024.
