If Saturday at Penn State taught us anything about Colton Joseph, it’s that watching Wisconsin’s new quarterback probably won’t be boring.
Maybe exhilarating. Occasionally maddening. Sometimes both within the same quarter.
Luke Fickell has already accepted the terms.
“Unfortunately, it might just be a little bit of a rollercoaster ride,” Fickell said of Joseph. “I mean, here’s a guy that has incredible ability, you know, and he’s growing and learning as well.”
That feels like the appropriate way to understand Joseph four games into his Wisconsin career.
The Old Dominion transfer has thrown for 987 yards and seven touchdowns while adding 121 yards and two scores on the ground. He has also thrown five interceptions, including three against No. 13 Penn State.
PFF’s charting captures the variance even better. Joseph has produced three big-time throws, which PFF defines as passes with excellent ball location and timing, generally thrown farther downfield or into a tighter window. He’s also been charged with eight turnover-worthy plays thus far.
And somehow, the 24-20 road win might have been the most convincing argument yet for why Wisconsin is willing to live with all of it.
