The Wisconsin football program has spent the last few recruiting cycles trying to expand where it can realistically win battles for high-end talent.
Arizona is quickly becoming one of those places.
Jalanie George, one of the nation’s premier defensive prospects in the 2028 recruiting class, announced his verbal commitment to Luke Fickell and the Badgers, choosing Wisconsin from a final group that also included Auburn, Miami and Washington.
“AGTG Go Badgers 🦡,” George wrote.
George had accumulated more than 35 scholarship offers, with Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Texas and USC among the programs that had pursued him during the process.
The significance here is hard to miss.
George, a 6-foot-5, roughly 245-pound edge defender from Desert Edge High School in Goodyear, Arizona, is viewed as a 5-star prospect by the 247Sports Composite and is one of the top 30 prospects in the country.
More importantly for Wisconsin, this wasn’t a recruitment where the Badgers simply got involved early and held off a regional field. They beat legitimate national college football programs for George’s services.
George has already produced like a player deserving that attention. As a sophomore, he recorded 54 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks.
His physical profile makes the projection even more intriguing. George already has the length and frame to hold up on the edge, with room to add quite a bit of weight without sacrificing the burst and movement skills that have made him such a coveted defensive prospect in this class.
There is also an important relationship component to Wisconsin’s win. Desert Edge is quietly becoming one of the Badgers’ strongest recruiting footholds out West.
Current Wisconsin linebacker Jon Jon Kamara attended Desert Edge before beginning his college career at Kansas. The Badgers also secured commitments from Desert Edge defensive lineman Yahzeen Zion and linebacker Nathan Jones in the class of 2027, giving George multiple familiar connections to Madison before he ever made his decision.
That pipeline mattered enough for Wisconsin to remain involved even after George initially had other programs occupying more prominent positions in his recruitment. However, a September game-day visit for the Week 2 win over Western Illinois helped push the Badgers firmly back into the picture before George eventually included them among his final four.
Now, he becomes another foundational piece for a 2028 class that already includes four-star linebacker Cale Britt and Missouri offensive lineman Brock Barrows. Britt became Wisconsin’s first commitment in the cycle in July before Barrows followed suit later that month.
There is obviously a long way between an early commitment and signing day for a player in the 2028 class. But Wisconsin doesn’t often win recruitments for defenders with George’s national profile, and he has officially become the first five-star commitment of the Fickell era.
For a staff trying to prove it can recruit beyond the program’s traditional geographic and talent ceilings, this one matters.
