Wisconsin football has reached its first natural checkpoint of the 2026 season, and the view looks considerably different than it did a month ago.

Luke Fickell and the Badgers enter their Week 6 bye at 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Big Ten play, riding four straight wins after opening the season with a 41-13 loss to Notre Dame.

There are legitimate reasons for optimism.

Wisconsin went on the road to beat No. 13 Penn State, then returned home to dismantle Michigan State 31-3. During its four-game winning streak, UW is averaging 36.2 points and 403.3 yards while allowing just 10.5 points and 246.5 yards per game.

Now comes the part where we find out how much of this is real.

The October stretch after the bye includes road trips to UCLA and Iowa, with USC coming to Camp Randall in between them. Wisconsin has given itself a chance to make this season interesting. The next three games should tell us considerably more about where the ceiling actually sits.

Before we get there, let’s hand out some grades for the first five games.
