Wisconsin guard John Blackwell declares for 2026 NBA Draft, enters transfer portal
Wisconsin Badgers guard John Blackwell declares for the 2026 NBA Draft while entering the transfer portal following a standout junior season.

A University of Wisconsin men’s basketball star is set to test the NBA waters again this offseason — but this time, with another layer added to the process.
John Blackwell announced that he’s entering his name into the 2026 NBA Draft while also planning to enter the transfer portal, beginning what will once again be an important evaluation period for one of the Big Ten’s most productive guards.
“After a lot of thought and prayer with my family, I want to share that I won’t be returning to play for the Badgers next season,” Blackwell wrote. “I plan to ENTER THE NBA DRAFT AND THE TRANSFER PORTAL as I explore every opportunity to take the next step in my career.
“This was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make because my experience here has been nothing short of incredible. The work I’ve put in alongside the guidance and direction I’ve received from Coach Gard and his staff has helped me grow into a player I didn’t know I could become. But that growth is exactly what’s driving this decision. I believe I owe it to myself and my family to chase the highest level I can reach, and this is the right time to take that step and leap of faith.
“My time in Madison has truly changed my life. Through every high and every tough loss, Badger Nation showed up with unwavering support. I’m beyond grateful—and I’ll carry that with me always.
“My prayer is that you understand my decision. Madison will always be a second home to me for the rest of my life. This place and this community will always be part of who I am. Thank you for everything!”
While the situation is different this time around, parts of this process aren’t unfamiliar.
