Despite cruel twist of fate, Wisconsin football looks like itself in win over Miami (OH)
The Billy Edwards injury looms large, but the Wisconsin Badgers put their refreshed identity and toughness on full display in the Week 1 win.
Can you imagine what was going through Luke Fickell’s mind?
His third year in Madison. His third straight transfer starting quarterback fallen victim to a freak injury. His seat warming, his signal caller hurt, his schedule grim.
We know little about Edwards’ status. “Don’t know anything as of now,” Fickell said immediately after the game. “But he’s out here with us, and that’s a good sign.”
But the biggest takeaway from the Wisconsin football team's Week 1 win over Miami (OH) isn’t that it may be down yet another starting quarterback. It’s that the Badgers finally look like themselves once again.
Thursday night’s opener was far from perfect. Aside from the massive development of Edwards sustaining a non-contact injury and possibly missing time, the Badgers held a slim 3-0 lead heading into halftime and only truly put the game away in the 4th quarter, when backup quarterback Danny O’Neil knifed into the end zone on a sneak to put Wisconsin up three scores.
Still, the Badgers had a different edge about them Thursday night.
