It seems the dust has finally settled on an unusually hectic offseason for Greg Gard and the Wisconsin Badgers basketball program.

Gone are starting point guard Chucky Hepburn and wing A.J. Storr, who entered the transfer portal in search of new opportunities. Bench pieces Connor Essegian and Gus Yalden also parted ways with the Badgers.

These departures forced Gard and his staff to adjust and fill the gaps in the Badgers lineup with key transfers. Central Arkansas guard Camren Hunter, Northern Illinois forward Xavier Amos, and Missouri guard John Tonje were brought in to fill those roles and bring stability to the roster.

Now a more offensive-minded program, Wisconsin coaches were able to recruit the portal specifically for its European ball-screen style offense, which features a lot of pick-and-roll actions and free-flowing movement.

"Not that defense isn't important, but the rules have all shifted to favor offense and penalize defense," Gard told reporters. "They want more fouls, more free throws, more points. Look back at every rule change, there's been an uptick in scoring, and they've all been made to push scoring up, so you have to stay ahead of the curve."

Even though Gard has indicated he's open to adding another frontcourt transfer if the right fit emerges for Wisconsin, let's take a way too early look at what the Badgers depth chart could look like in 2024-25.

Point Guard

  1. Camren Hunter

  2. Daniel Freitag

  3. Kamari McGee

Losing Hepburn, a key multi-year starter at point guard, is significant. Nonetheless, the Badgers have a reasonably deep backcourt with several viable options to fill the void left by his departure.
