Luke Fickell preached smaller recruiting classes on National Signing Day. So why is Wisconsin aggressively pursuing high school talent again?

One of the more interesting developments of the Wisconsin football program’s offseason hasn’t just been the success of its 2027 recruiting class. It’s how quickly the coaching staff appears to have pivoted back toward a more traditional recruiting approach.

On National Signing Day, Luke Fickell openly discussed treating high school recruits like “draft picks,” taking smaller classes, and relying more heavily on the transfer portal as college football continued to evolve.

Now, after landing 23 verbal commitments in the 2027 cycle and aggressively pursuing high school talent again, it’s fair to wonder:

Q: Didn’t Luke Fickell say Wisconsin was moving toward smaller recruiting classes and more of a draft pick mentality? Why does it already seem like they’ve ditched that approach?
