For a couple of weeks, there was reason to wonder whether Wisconsin football had finally started turning a corner under Luke Fickell.

The Badgers had won five of six games, knocked off No. 16 USC and returned to the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2023. They appeared to be developing an identity, particularly defensively, that suggested some of the program’s longstanding problems were being addressed.

Then came Saturday’s trip to Iowa City.

Wisconsin was embarrassed 30-0 by Iowa, a performance that made much of the optimism surrounding this team feel premature.

And perhaps the most concerning part? We’ve seen this before.

Fickell entered Saturday having lost three consecutive meetings against Iowa by a combined score of 94-16. Make that four straight losses, with the Hawkeyes now holding a 124-16 scoring advantage during his tenure.

Wisconsin has been shut out in consecutive meetings, and the physical disparity between these Big Ten football programs remains unmistakable.

Here are three takeaways from Fickell’s postgame comments.
