Wisconsin Football; Badgers transfer quarterback Tyler Van Dyke

Landing a veteran quarterback in the transfer portal was a top priority for Wisconsin Badgers head football coach Luke Fickell.

This was partly because starting QB Tanner Mordecai exhausted his eligibility after the bowl game and also due to the offensive struggles in the first year running the air raid under Phil Longo.

Hoping to ignite the downfield passing attack, the Wisconsin Badgers brought in Miami transfer Tyler Van Dyke, who has 28 career starts under his belt, to push for the starting role.

This past season, Van Dyke threw for 2,703 yards with 19 touchdowns, 23 big-time throws, and 12 interceptions.

"He's got a lot of experience," Longo told reporters. He's a mentally tough kid. He's very bright. Obviously, he's tall and rangy, and he can throw it all over the yard; he can make all the throws."

According to Pro Football Focus, the Connecticut native is the second-highest-graded Power 5 transfer quarterback this offseason (85.9), trailing only Dillon Gabriel, who went from Oklahoma to Oregon.

Van Dyke would finish with the 20th-highest grade in the entire country among QBs who played at least 50% of snaps.

Tyler Van Dyke Among Top Graded Transfers by PFF

If everything goes according to plan, Tyler Van Dyke will be the starting quarterback for the Wisconsin football program next season.

Reference the graphic above, Van Dyke finished last season with a Pro Football Focus grade of (85.9), which is considered high quality by their grading metric. For reference, Tanner Mordecai had a 79.9 grade in 2023.
