This was a well thought out analysis and a beautifully written piece of sports journalism. Bravo! You described the reality and firing Fickell will not change that narrative.

Firing McIntosh will.

No, it won’t. Wisconsin can’t afford firing either one. That will simply put the university further behind the other schools in this era of pay for play. Instead of calling for firings, donate 100 million to the university, and then they’ll be able to get rid of the coach and AD

They cant afford not to fire Ficjell at least. Attendance is tanking, recruits are renewing on their commitments and this will affect donations and season tickets, next year if Fickell stays. They cant afford to not fire Fickell and McIntosh is,a fuckup. From the toxic program culture he,alliwed to continue to his not including the track abd cross country teams in the new indoor practice facility. Those programs, have successful coaches-aja nit hired by McIntosh

The letter to fans was tone deaf, IMO.

Chryst was a proven head coach in the old world. The program was decaying under him in the new world.

Reality escapes most sports fans who apply no logic to their emotion. If the university spends millions firing their coach and AD, and millions recruiting and hiring replacements, where will that money come from? They will not replace the monies lost with additional ticket sales. It’s ludicrous. Wisconsin doesn’t have the dough SEC schools have. I don’t see these Badger fans donating large sums to the university. They enjoy rattling sabers, but their complaining has no substance.

I wonder how much money all the people clamoring for the firing of Fickell have donated. I put my money where my mouth is. Have you?

Why is he waiting until now to decide the program needs more investment? Should happened several years ago. Good luck getting donors to pony up now with the product on the field being crap. Jettison McIntosh too. So many fuckups from coaches creating toxic cultures, the fiasco with not including track and cross country teams in plans for new practice facility to the missed hire of Fickell and just now figuring out the football program needs more money.

That’s a completely fair frustration, and honestly, I think a lot of people inside the fanbase share it. You don’t suddenly wake up in Year 3 of a struggling rebuild and realize you need to start acting like a modern Big Ten program. That shift should’ve started years ago.

From my perspective, this feels like a department reacting to being left behind rather than proactively building toward what college football has become. NIL, facilities, and staffing are areas where Wisconsin has been playing catch-up across the board, and now they’re paying the price for it.

Convincing donors to invest after years of missteps and a product that looks this uninspired is going to be a tough sell. In a lot of ways, this is Wisconsin trying to fix structural issues that have been ignored for too long. Color me skeptical.
