Analytics: Wisconsin Football "Deep Dive" Week 3
Let's dig into the numbers from UW's week 3 matchup vs. Georgia Southern.
We’re back with Part II of the “Deep Dive” Series following the Wisconsin Football Team. So, let’s get DEEP into the Analytics that can help us make sense of this Wisconsin Badgers Football Team through Week 3!
First, we’ll start with Tanner Mordecai…
Tanner Mordecai:
Air Yards/ATT x INT Rate:
Quadrant Ranking:
Bottom Right – Ballers (High Air Yards/ATT + Low INT Rate)
Bottom Left – Dink & Dunkers (Low Air Yards/ATT + Low INT Rate)
Top Right – “Gunslingers” (High Air Yards/ATT + High INT Rate)
Top Left – POOR BALL SECURITY (Low Air Yards/ATT + High INT Rate)
Mordecai = Red Dot is now firmly into the Dink & Dunkers Quadrant. He had a good outing on Saturday from a Ball-Security standpoint with no INTs!! As I’m writing I can think of a time that he put the ball in jeopardy on Saturday.
Air Yards/ATT x On-TGT %:
Quadrant Ranking:
Top Right – “Ballers” (High Air Yards/ATT + High On-TGT %)
Top Left – “Dink & Dunkers” (Low Air Yards/ATT + High On-TGT %)
Bottom Right – “Gunslingers” (High Air Yards/ATT + Low On-TGT %)
Bottom Left – “POOR BALL SECURITY” (Low Air Yards/ATT + Low On-TGT %)
Mordecai = Red Dot is again in the Dink & Dunkers Quadrant. Overall, his On-TGT % is nothing to be concerned with; he threw a lot of Passes right on the money!! But as some are concerned, we’re not pushing the ball down the field at will. He didn’t convert on a lot of the opportunities he had in 1 on 1 situations against WSU. Do we need him to push the ball that far downfield, probably not versus the Georgia Southern and Buffalo’s of the CFB World. But we’re entering B1G Play, and this team hasn’t shown we should be keeping any bullets in the chamber. I expect more downfield passing on Friday Night, so we’ll keep a close eye on his INT Rate but also his On-TGT Rate!!
ATTs x Net Big Play %:
Quadrant Ranking:
Top Right – “Ballers” (High ATTs + High Net Big Play Rate)
Top Left – “Assassins” (Low ATTS + High Net Big Play Rate)
Bottom Right – “Game Managers” (High ATTs + Low Net Big Play Rate)
Bottom Left – POOR BALL SECURITY (Low ATTS + Net Big Play Rate)
Mordecai = Red Dot in “Gunslinger” Quadrant. With no TDs and no INTs on Saturday, Mordecai did nothing to improve his standing here.
We’ll continue to track these three Metrics as the season moves on and stack him up against other QBs to judge where he’s at!! His Week 3 Performance wasn’t in line with my expectations of where I THINK he’ll be trending, which is towards the “Ballers”/ELITE Quadrant!!! The slow starts have thrown this whole thing off, and I don’t think this offense has ever found a groove. So it’s very difficult to judge Mordecai and what we can expect in B1G Play!
Next, we will get into some analytics requested by some of my Twitter followers!
Wisconsin Football Pass Rush:
Drop Type:
Nothing surprising here. It's a lot tougher to get to the QB when those Drops are 0, 1, or 3-step drops vs. a more traditional 5 & 7-step drop you’d see from a Pro-Style Offense! And by golly, we’ve seen a ton of 0 | 1 | 3-step drops so far this year…making it extremely hard to generate pressure!
DL Position:
First, a primer on DL Positions and how you can conceptualize the stats below!!
Looking at this, we obviously need to generate a bit more pressure from our interior DL Positions, but it’s extremely difficult, given how Teams are trying, at least seemingly from the data and Drop Types, to get the ball out quickly.
One really bright spot is James Thompson Jr., who is playing every DL position except OLB (6|7|9 Tech) and has a Pressure Rate of >9% at each position. And although NT isn’t where he’s best, Thompson JR is still generating good pressure when lined up inside the OGs.
With Mullens potentially coming back this week or After the Bye-Week, could we see more Rodas Johnson at the NT Position? He’s been pretty far and away the most effective at generating pressure from that position. Also Ben Barten really came on against Ga. Southern, so we’ll see!
