Analytics: Wisconsin Football "Deep Dive" Week 4
Everything we know about the Badgers after four weeks.
We’re back with Part III of the “Deep Dive” Series following the Wisconsin Football Team. So let’s get DEEP into the Analytics that can help us make sense of this Wisconsin Badgers Football Team through Week 4!
First, we’ll start with Tanner Mordecai…
Tanner Mordecai:
Air Yards/ATT x INT Rate:
Quadrant Ranking:
Bottom Right – Ballers (High Air Yards/ATT + Low INT Rate)
Bottom Left – Dink & Dunkers (Low Air Yards/ATT + Low INT Rate)
Top Right – “Gunslingers” (High Air Yards/ATT + High INT Rate)
Top Left – POOR BALL SECURITY (Low Air Yards/ATT + High INT Rate)
Mordecai = Red Dot is now firmly into the POOR BALL SECURITY Quadrant. He threw a 60/40 INT on Friday, 60% was on him. The ball should have been out quicker and more outside. But 40% of it is on his WR (Chimere) who has to go make a play or a the very least make a defensive effort to avoid that INT!!
Air Yards/ATT x On-TGT %:
Quadrant Ranking:
Top Right – “Ballers” (High Air Yards/ATT + High On-TGT %)
Top Left – “Dink & Dunkers” (Low Air Yards/ATT + High On-TGT %)
Bottom Right – “Gunslingers” (High Air Yards/ATT + Low On-TGT %)
Bottom Left – “POOR BALL SECURITY” (Low Air Yards/ATT + Low On-TGT %)
Mordecai = Red Dot is again in the Dink & Dunkers Quadrant. Overall, his On-TGT % is nothing to be concerned with; he threw a lot of Passes right on the money!! But as some are concerned we’re not pushing the ball down the field at will. I expected to see a bit more downfield passing on Friday Night, but I think with how the game went they didn’t need to force anything downfield. The couple of times they did, Tanner was right on the money!!!
ATTs x Net Big Play %:
Quadrant Ranking:
Top Right – “Ballers” (High ATTs + High Net Big Play Rate)
Top Left – “Assassins” (Low ATTS + High Net Big Play Rate)
Bottom Right – “Game Managers” (High ATTs + Low Net Big Play Rate)
Bottom Left – POOR BALL SECURITY (Low ATTS + Net Big Play Rate)
Mordecai = Red Dot in “Gunslinger” Quadrant. With no TDs and 1 INTs on Friday, Mordecai did nothing to improve his standing here. It won’t take much to get into the “Ballers” Quadrant, he’d already be there if not for numerous potential TD drops from his WR group!!
We’ll continue to track these three Metrics as the season moves on and stack him up against other QBs to judge where he’s at!! His Week 4 Performance wasn’t in line with my expectations of where I THINK he’ll be trending, which is towards the “Ballers”/ELITE Quadrant!!! If you bring a subjective view of how things have impacted him from a WR Performance standpoint you can believe that. But here’s a more objective view of how his WR’s haven’t been holding their end of the bargain…Below is Completion % (COMP %) MINUS his On-TGT %. Essentially this is showing how much WR “HELP” or lack thereof he’s getting.
He’s sitting with a -3.91% drop in COMP % to his On-TGT. Now this doesn’t look to be outside the norm for College QBs or at-least in 2023. But those -3.91% have some big implications to his BIG PLAY RATE. And it’s why I’m not at all worried about his lackluster performance from a QB Efficiency/Numbers standpoint.
Next, we will get into some analytics requested by some of my Twitter followers!
